Starting in Chicago, running through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and ending in Santa Monica, Calif., Route 66 was established in 1926. Although Route 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985, it remains in the national consciousness with cities along the route using it to promote tourism to this day.
