Based on true events, Woman Walks Ahead tells the story of Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain), a widowed artist from New York who, in the 1880s, traveled alone to North Dakota to paint a portrait of Chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes). Her arrival at Standing Rock is welcomed with open hostility by a US Army officer (Sam Rockwell), who has stationed troops around the Lakota reservation to undermine Native American claims to the land. As Catherine and Sitting Bull grow closer, and as their friendship-and his life-are threatened by imperious government forces, Catherine must contend with the violence that underlies her position.
Oklahoma's Tribal Film Festival's increases Native American representation on a global scale. With premier film Showcases and live event Screenings; we touch people with our values, culture and customs. The festival showcases unique stories of unparalleled importance that celebrate the Native experience and educate others in all things indigenous.
Some past events include our Spring Sundance Showcase this year. We featured the Oklahoma Premier of "The Rider, straight from The Cannes and Sundance Film Festival to Tribal Film Festival. Some lucky members got a private screening of "Indian Horse",based on a book by Richard Wagamese. This film does not have U.S. distribution, we felt fortunate to be able to present it to our members. Our western themed event of "Dinner and a Movie" included a Casting Director workshop with the esteemed Ricki Maslar and a writing interactive workshop with DMA on behalf of Disney/ABC. Last year, during Native American month, we hosted "Hostiles" starring Christian Bale and Wes Studi, with Wes Studi, Chris Eyre and Dr. Joely Proudfit in attendance.
Approximately 300 to 500 attendees are expected over the course of the day, but our reach through social media, local TV, radio, and print promotion is over 250,000 people around the world. Mary Aboud is our Co-Director and head of volunteers; Ruth Bible-Ingram is head of Sponsorship.
